The Valpoi municipal garden is in desperate need of a makeover. Locals have pointed out that politicians expect the town to be a role model as far as development is concerned, but the garden has been neglected for many years.
While Valpoi MLA Vishwajit Rane is trying to implement various projects in the town, such as a hospital and cinema hall, nothing has been done about the garden, which belongs to the Valpoi municipality. Incidentally, the garden contains a historical monument, which is tribute to Goa’s liberation movement.
Since the garden is located in the heart of the Valpoi bazaar, it needs to be improved in all aspects. At present, there is nowhere to sit, and many dogs roam the place. Garbage is also strewn everywhere, making the area look even uglier.
Shiv Jayanti is celebrated annually in this garden; it attracts huge crowds, which are unhappy due to the venue’s dilapidated condition.
For many years, people have been demanding an upgrade for the garden. They have called for good quality infrastructure for children and as well as a flower plantation, but the Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) has not paid attention to their demands.
Some of the other works demanded by the people include painting the compound wall, installing new benches and lights as well as a music system. They have also demanded that MLA Rane look into the matter and ensure that the garden is upgraded.
Many VMC chairpersons have assured to give the garden a facelift, but till today, no assurance has been fulfilled. The Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) has many schemes for uplifting the garden, but none have been implemented.
“For the last decade, VMC is trying to give this garden a new look. Two resolutions were also taken in this regard, but nothing has moved forward. I feel very guilty for not doing anything, but I assure that shortly I will act positively to change the face of the garden. I agree that the historical monument in this garden should also be preserved for future generations as it is tribute to Goa’s liberation movement,” said Ramdas Shirodkar, VMC Chairperson.
Former VMC Chairperson Umesh Gulelkar stated, “Many times during my tenure, I took up the job of cleaning the garden. I had maintained it with the municipality’s infrastructure. I demand that before having mass changes, VMC should at least start cleaning the garden regularly.”
