Nepal Cricketer Karan KC Penalised for Social Media Comment on Umpires

Nepal national cricketer Karan KC has landed in controversy during the ongoing Prime Minister One-Day tournament after making remarks about umpires on social media. Representing Nepal Police Club, the 34-year-old all-rounder commented on a post by Troll Cricket Nepal that was considered inappropriate and against the spirit of the game. His comment quickly drew criticism from the Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association of Nepal (CUSAN), which demanded strict disciplinary action.

Following the incident, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced a one-match ban for Karan KC. CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama confirmed that the decision was taken in consultation with relevant stakeholders. In addition to the suspension, the cricketer has also been fined 100 percent of his match fee.

In his defence, Karan KC stated that his comment was made out of “curiosity in a joking manner,” and not intended to offend anyone. He later deleted the post and issued an apology, saying that umpires, coaches, and players are all part of the same cricketing family and that he regretted any misunderstanding caused by his words.

Despite the apology, the umpires’ association maintained its strong stance, saying that the matter should not end with a simple apology. CUSAN president Mohammad Shafiq stressed that the comment had hurt the professional dignity and security of umpires, urging CAN to take stricter action. The incident has sparked debate within Nepal’s cricket community over player conduct on social media.
