MARGAO: Representatives of various NGOs from Salcete on Saturday strongly condemned the attack on the house of Fr Bismarck Dias and said that attacks on activists supporting independents have registered a rise since the code of conduct came into force.
Colva Civic and Consumer Forum secretary Judith Almeida warned that the people of Goa will not tolerate any threats to members of society.
Terezinha Fernandes from Colva told newsmen that miscreants had set her fast food joint on fire in Benaulim earlier this month and said the recent incidents are an eye opener to the people of Goa. “My fast food joint was set afire just because I was supporting the candidature of activist Dr Hubert Gomes. Today, they have set fire to the premise, tomorrow they might set human being on fire”, she added.
George Barretto of Navelim claimed he has received threats from Mumbai for supporting independent candidate Avertano Furtado against PWD Minster Churchill Alemao in Navelim. He, however, asserted that he will not be cowed down by such threats, adding that the NGOs would not keep quiet if these threats continue.
Jose Rodrigues, Peter Viegas and others condemned the attack on the house of Fr Bismarck and expressed their solidarity with the priest.
