PANJIM: Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has set a final one month ultimatum to the North Goa coastal panchayats to ensure that only segregated waste is supplied to the Saligao waste treatment facility, failing which the respective Sarpanch will be held accountable.
The Corporation has also resolved to treat the waste generated from fish and meat remains at the Saligao plant, which was earlier not allowed.
GWMC recently held a meeting with coastal panchayats directing them to ensure that the waste supplied to the plant is segregated. The panchayats have been asked to direct all commercial establishments and residential complexes to make sure that dry and wet waste is not mixed.
GWMC director Michael Lobo said that the panchayats have been given one month to ensure segregation of waste at source. “We provide bins and all other infrastructure but still the plant is supplied mixed waste. Now we have given final ultimatum to the panchayats. The Sarpanch will be held accountable if the panchayat fails to provide segregated waste,” he said.
The waste from 25 panchayats located in the coastal belt of North Goa is being treated at this plant. Apart from the fresh waste, the garbage dump lying at the Saligao plateau is also being treated and cleared off.
Commissioned in May 2016, the plant has processed around 60,000-65,000 tonnes of waste, while also producing electricity which is supplied to the grid besides being used for captive purpose.
