Noted social worker Dr Susrut is dead

Noted social worker, students leader and practitioner of alternative medicine Dr Susrut Agnelo Martins (48) of Paitona-Salvado do Mundo passed away on Friday night due to massive heart attack.
According to reports, Dr Martins was proceeding towards his clinic at Miramar on April 28 when his car was hit from the rear by another car driven by a woman. Dr Martins lost control of his vehicle and his car dashed against a car in front of him.
Dr Martins sustained some neck injuries in the mishap but continued with his daily routines.
On Friday evening, he began complaining of neck and chest pain after attending to his patients in his clinic, and was admitted to Campal Clinic in Panjim at around 9.30 pm. However, he passed away due to a massive heart attack in the Intensive Care Unit within half an hour.
Son of freedom fighter late Dr Jose Francisco Martins and late Dr Esmina Gomes Martins, Dr Susrut Martins was the youngest President of Konkani Bhasha Mandal and played an important role in getting land for the Konkani Bhasha Mandal building in Margao.
Actively promoting homeopathic treatment in the State, Dr Martins was the convener of Vision India, President of Goa State Branch of the Homeopathic Medical Association of India for almost 10 years and made a lot of efforts to get the homeopathic wing of the health department.
He was also the President of Alternative Medical Association of India.
He started the Goa People’s Forum and was also instrumental in getting Doordarshan Kendra for the State. In the 1980s he had formed Akhil Goem Yuvak Mahasang, an organisation devoted for the empowerment of youth.
Dr Martins also created his own medicines through research. He had earned a name for himself by successfully treating patients with serious ailments.
Besides homeopath, Dr Susrut also practiced other forms of alternative medicines including acupuncture.
He authored four books, ‘Introduction to Alternative Medicne’, ‘Biochemic Remedies’, ‘Backflower Remedies’ and ‘Neck, Shoulder and Back Pain’.
Besides being involved in a number of associations, Dr Martins also had a passion for photography and clicked about 35,000 photographs during his lifetime.
He is survived by his wife Dr Beena and two daughters, Esmina and Elizabeth.
Incidentally, May 1 happens to be the 18th wedding anniversary of Dr Susrut and Dr Bina Martins.
The funeral cortege will leave his residence at Kranti Jyoti Bhavan, Paitona, on May 2 at 4 pm for Eucharistic celebration and burial at the Salvador-do-Mundo church.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has condoled the death of Dr Martins. In a message, the CM said that Dr Martins was a well known social worker and was associated with several organizations.
GPCC secretary Milan Burman also condoled the death of Dr Martins.
