On advice from All-India Congress Committee General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, the NSUI will now go in for elections to appoint a new panel, comprising president, vice-president and four general secretaries.
Addressing media persons Friday, NSUI national election in-charge Manthan Pathak said that the State NSUI failed to take up youth-related issues since it was elected last February. “Hence the committee is being dissolved with immediate effect. NSUI president Gitesh Khandekar has been relieved from his post,” he said.
Pathak said that fresh elections would be held at college, university, district and State level, after the membership drive which was kicked off Friday morning. The one month-membership drive aims to enroll at least 1,500 students, he said, in the presence of national secretary Hasiba Amin.
Currently 3,900 students are enrolled with the NSUI. Elections will be held across all colleges in the State to first constitute college committees. Later, a district committee will be elected by members of the college committees. This district committee will finally elect the State committee.
Pathak said that there would be 20 percent reservation for women at every level, with SC/ST reservations at State and national-level elections.
Pathak said that students getting addicted to drugs was a serious issue and NSUI will ensure that steps are taken to curb the menace. “It is a serious issue not just in Goa but in the Northern states as well. It is necessary to educate students at school and college level on the issue,” he said.
NSUI national president Roji M John will be in Goa on Saturday, while NSUI Goa in-charge Amir Javed will visit Goa next week.
