PANJIM: Social media platforms over the weekend were abuzz with posts and tweets as hundreds of local commuters, including many tourists, were affected by the taxi operators strike in one way or another.
Even as taxi operators protested at Azad Maidan, angry people, including tourists, locals and students set social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook abuzz, raising their voice against the taxi operators.
Keval Borkar in his tweet said “Its high tym now that d govt shud consider online taxi services & good transport systm. Every tym this strike of #TaxiUnion is their #SelfishAct & has no sense. An individual hs 2 think 10 tyms bfr hiring an Auto, Cab, even 2 wheeler Pilots in Goa”.
Naomi Dutta angrily tweeted saying, “Never been happier to be back in Mumbai after a short hellish trip to Goa. Made infinitely worse by a continuing #TaxiStrike. Is amazing how a tourist hotspot has no decent public transportation”.
While some blasted the taxi operators on social media, others urged the authorities to rope in cab services like Ola and Uber saying that taxi mafia politics should end.
Siddharth Shirodkar in a post said, “Waiting for the day when Ola or Uber or something similar..will be introduced in Goa… instead of local taxi who only have aim to fool people and charge high rates..#TaxiStrike”.
Another person, Pankaj, coming out strongly against the taxi operators said that in a State where #Tourism is key, one can’t be holding the State to ransom and creating inconvenience to tourists. #Goa.
People also reacted angrily at MLAs who supported the taxi operators stating that they should be ashamed of bowing down to the taxi owners.
“Politicians in Goa, across political parties, should be ashamed of supporting the taxi strike today. Those in the Government are accepting their failure while those in opposition are fuelling the unrest,” said Giriraj Pai Vernekar in his Facebook post
Another person, Cyrus Sanches in his FB post said, “The taxi association in on strike. Three cheers. They want to hold the government and people of Goa to ransom. Is this issue really speed governors or something far more serious”.
