MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) meeting on Wednesday witnessed major arguments over the planning of Carnival float parade with opposition councillors pledging to bring back the float parade and Shigmo back to town.
They warned the Chairperson that if the Council sticks to the Opinion Poll Square route then there will be two carnival parades.
Councillor Damu Naik in a letter to the MMC has asked it to restore the carnival parade to old route. He said that it was a temporary route as work of the sewage was on and the road was dug up. Shigmo too should be back in Margao.
Councillor Arthur D’Silva has been appointed as the chairman of the Carnival Organising Committee.
Councillor Ketan Kurtarkar said, “Many Margao and Fatorda people have demanded for the old route as it has sentiments attached to it”.
When Chairperson Pooja Naik insisted on the new route claiming that it has the Collector and Margao traffic cell approval, the Fatorda Forward Councillors too backed her.
Kurtarkar said, “I am warning you, there will be two parades if you’ll stick to the new route because we are for people.
The group of councillors including Ketan, Rupesh, Arthur and others have assured that the carnival parade will be organised on the old route.
Damu and Avinash Shirodkar said the people are now asking on why Margao Carnival, Shigmo and Julus have been taken away. “We will have it in proper channel and will submit a representation to Collector with the consent,” they said.
