PANJIM: More than 9000 students were conferred degrees,
medals, certificates and doctorates of philosophy at the 28th Goa University
(GU) convocation ceremony on Friday by Goa Governor and varsity Chancellor Dr
Mridula Sinha.
Amongst the 9737 students, 8199 were awarded the bachelor’s
degree followed by 1415 master’s degree while the PhD was conferred on 38
candidates. In addition, 120 received post graduate diplomas and three received
MPhil degrees.

Addressing the students at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukerjee
Stadium, Dr Sinha said they should be ready to face challenges as they walk
away with their academic achievements. “You (students) have worked hard during
your academic years and the techniques adopted for studies will bear fruit when
you will face the challenges. It is also certain that during this phase, you
will have the blessings of your families, mentors, university and the State,”
she said addressing the gathering in Hindi.
The Governor applauded the achievements of women students
stating they should avail all benefits that will shape their personality and
bring them success in the career they pursue.
“You (students) are being conferred degrees from a highly
reputed university. This will help you travel the country and world. Try to
contribute something to the world that is within your culture and tradition,”
she said, acknowledging GU’s fine job in imparting higher education.
Touching upon the sensitive issue of drug abuse, she stated
that the nation is passing through a crucial stage wherein several youths are
addicted to drugs. In Goa too, she said, some youth are victim to this and
expressed optimism that it would be eradicated from society.
Amongst the award recipients were 69 gold medalists, 60
other prize winners and 27 who received certificates of merit in recognition of
their excellence.
“The annual convocation is a time to share with the State
our perception of where we stand, our aspirations, hopes and our concerns about
fulfilling the responsibility that the State has given us as the only
university created by it to ensure that its youth have access to higher
education,” GU Vice Chancellor Dr Satish Shetye said.
