PANJIM: The State government has constituted a committee to decide on conducting disaster awareness and management activities at the district and community level.
The committee headed by Revenue Secretary and comprising North and South Collectors, Director of Fire & Emergency, Director of Health Services, SP (Training) Goa Police, Under Secretary (Revenue-I) and Indian Medical Association (IMA) Representative will also train the first responders. As per the notification issued on Friday, IMA and Institution of Disaster, Emergency and Accident (IDEA) shall work to identify and train master trainers in the State. IMA is also tasked with training students and society in general in medical preparedness during disasters.
The development comes a few days after the government activated its disaster management mechanism and announced it would float a Request For Proposal (RFP) to collect data for disaster management and integrating helpline numbers under the Centre’s disaster management scheme by the month-end.
The Centre also asked all State governments to be better prepared for natural disasters to reduce their impact which have already claimed 2,200 lives and economic loss to the tune of Rs 60,000 crore across the country.
