PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said the government is thinking of implementing smart meters in Panjim.
“In the next six months, we are thinking of initially putting smart meters and as a result of this you will not be visited by a meter reader. The meters will be read by a computer automatically every hour and will also tell if the meter has gone wrong. The bill will be automatically generated by the computer,” the Chief Minister said.
He said that the smart meters are in the initial stages and should also be approved by the authority, after which they will be commercialized.
“The cost will be about Rs 60 crore for 70,000 meters including all infrastructure,” Parrikar added. The Chief Minister assured that the meter reads need not worry as they would be shifted to another department.
The Chief Minister also said that once they have been fitted it will allow customers to shut their meters by remote to avoid any problems.
