In a recently held Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council meeting it was decided to introduce pay parking in Curchorem market after identifying suitable places as it appears that the traffic at Curchorem has reached a saturation point. Day by day the number of vehicles is increasing rapidly and the people have to park their vehicles haphazardly due to lack of parking space in the market area.
Citizens are complaining that some people who are going for work by train/bus and particularly some local businessmen, shops owners are keeping their vehicles and occupying parking places in front of their shops thus making it difficult for local people who are coming for shopping as they do not find place to park their vehicles.
Even the Curchorem traffic cell PI Edwin Colasso admitted that the place for parking in the market area is insufficient as the vehicles are increasing almost every day. “It is the duty of the municipalities and panchayats to provide parking spaces in their respective jurisdiction and therefore I have written a letter to CCMC pointing out that number of motorists who own commercial establishments in the market area and those who travel by train and buses to their work, park their vehicles in the designated parking area for the entire day, depriving people visiting the market for shorter duration,” said Colasso.
According to CCMC Chairperson Vishwas Sawant Dessai, the council has agreed in-principle to the proposal of pay parking and modalities will be worked out after consulting all the stake holders. “It is also decided to develop the road at Tambdi-Mati near the GSUDA market for parking purpose and also other places in the market wherever possible and the final decision will be taken soon after the Ganesh festival,” informed Sawant.
It is learnt that during the meeting held with Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral which was attended by traffic police, some local traders voiced their grievances saying that traffic police are harassing the people who are coming for shopping as a result they are losing their customers.
Disapproving the contention of the traders, Cabral asked their co-operation to make efficient traffic management in the interest of all.
