PCB warns PSL players leaving for IPL, legal action on cards

The rivalry between the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL) is spilling off the field. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday warned international cricketers who abandoned their PSL 11 contracts to join IPL 2026 as injury replacements.

High-profile exits include Sri Lankan T20I captain Dasun Shanaka, who joined Rajasthan Royals, and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani, signed by Kolkata Knight Riders. Both were initially slated for Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United, respectively. Naqvi confirmed that legal action is being considered, citing a growing trend of players treating PSL as a fallback before IPL offers. Last year, South African pacer Corbin Bosch faced similar proceedings.

PSL 2026 will be played behind closed doors due to West Asia security concerns, with venues reduced from six to two—Lahore and Karachi—and the opening ceremony cancelled. Ticket holders will receive refunds within 72 hours. The tournament kicks off with Lahore Qalandars facing Hyderabad Kingsmen.

Despite the challenges, Naqvi defended PSL’s appeal, highlighting the participation of top Australians like Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, and Glenn Maxwell. He stressed that global talent continues to support PSL, reinforcing its credibility despite IPL competition.
