PANJIM: The Penha de Franca Panchayat has strongly opposed the State government move allowing one more offshore casino of Deltin Palm Hotel Management and has resolved not to issue an NOC for the vessel to operate in River Mandovi, which comes under its jurisdiction.
Addressing a press conference in Panjim, the ruling group said that nearly 500 families of fishermen are totally dependent on the fishing activities in the area and the panchayat is strongly objecting to any more offshore casinos in River Mandovi.
“We are with the people; the local MLA Rohan Khaunte is misguiding the people of Porvorim that the panchayat members are supporting the anchoring of a new casino in River Mandovi which is false,” Penha de Franca Sarpanch Radhika Sawant said.
“We have passed a resolution at a specially called meeting to object the entry and operation of a new casino within our jurisdiction,” Sarpanch Sawant said.
Warning Khanute against misguiding the people of Porvorim, Panch Rajesh Volvoikar asked him not to take undue credit for the developments in the Porvorim, as, he said, the entire developmental projects in Porvorim were undertaken by the panchayat.
“All the projects, including sewerage project, service road and garbage collection have become a reality due to efforts of the panchayat members,” Volvoikar said.
