PONDA: The Quepem Urban Cooperative Credit Society (QUCCS) filed a police complaint against 29 defaulters and two of its staff members late Friday evening, on charges of cheating and violating the Society norms in connection with loans at its Shiroda branch.
Acting on a complaint by QUCCS Executive Director Paresh Cuncolienkar, Ponda Police have registered an offence against two staff and 29 loan defaulters against gold loans of Rs 1.5 crore under Section 420 of IPC.
Police said all the cases are filed separately.
When asked why a police complaint had been filed against only 29 persons for a fraud amounting to Rs 1.5 crore when the total fraud was estimated to the tune of Rs 5.27 crore, a society official said that more complaints would be filed against other defaulters, as and when other frauds are ascertained.
Meanwhile, speaking at a function after laying the foundation stone for Primary Health Centre project at Karai-Shiroda, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the QUCCS had hastened in the recovery work and had so far recovered Rs 70 lakh, after the government had threatened to act in the matter.
“In another society in Ponda taluka, one person had availed of loans amounting to crores of rupees in the names of several people. The society managed to recover Rs 3.5 crore, while Rs 1.5 crore in loans are still due,” added Parrikar.
