MARGAO: The Margao police were clearly outnumbered by the mining dependent people outside the CD Blue Chip building, even as additional reinforcements failed to come from the police headquarters when things threatened to go out of control.
While acting Margao PI Gurudas Kadam tried to save the situation for the Goa police by ensuring the safety and security of the activists holed up in the building, there were no adequate police personnel around to keep the protestors at bay.
Sources in the know said that an SOS was sent to the police higher ups to dispatch additional personnel immediately, but the additional reinforcements came only after the hour-long tension subsided and the protestors dispersed.
Miraculously or luckily, the small number of policemen succeeded in defusing the situation, saving the whole force the blushes. Surprisingly, the men in khaki were found wanting in intelligence gathering that mining dependent people were heading to Margao in vehicles. The police also failed to mobilize traffic police to control traffic along the CD Blue Chip and the adjoining roads.
