Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander submitted before the Goa Human Rights Commission assuring to improve the working hours of the personnel while also claiming that none from the department have complained about the pathetic working and living conditions at police stations.
The commission is hearing a petition filed by Advocate Aires Rodrigues alleging that policemen were made to work very long hours amidst pathetic and very appalling working conditions. Chander in his reply submitted that a proposal has been moved to create another 4629 posts in the department.
“No police personnel have complained on pathetic working and living conditions at police stations. Moreover, no other State has been able to implement the eight hour shift for police personnel,” he stated, adding that despite the increase in manpower it was not possible to allow the personnel to work for eight hours on account of the multifarious duties in the department.
GHRC in another direction has asked the DGP not to make any payments to the food caterer who supplied substandard food to the police during the BRICS summit held at Goa in October. The commission suggested that the amount of Rs 51 lakh be instead distributed among the victim police personnel. The matter has been adjourned to January 19.
