Four Margao councillors-elect test positive for COVID

MARGAO: The elections to the chairperson and vice-chairperson posts of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) are likely to be delayed as four councillors-elect tested positive for COVID-19. 

The elections to the above posts were scheduled on May 10 with Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes already serving the notices to the other councillors. However, he could not serve the notices to the above four councillors who have contracted the deadly infection.

“Yes, the elections to new chairperson and vice-chairperson posts were supposed to be held on May 10 as per instructions from the Directorate of Municipal Administration. But, I could not serve the notices regarding the same to these four councillors as they are undergoing COVID treatment. One of the councillors has been admitted in the hospital while others are in home isolation”, Fernandes said.

The chief officer said he has informed the DMA in this regard and is awaiting reply. 

According to sources, Goa Forward Party chief Vijai and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat are yet to decide as to who will head the MMC.  

Most municipalities have already elected their chairpersons and vice-chairpersons.
