MARGAO: A Portuguese-era building located in the Chinchinim bazaar (market), which was in a dilapidated condition, collapsed on Sunday due to the incessant rain.
No injuries were reported. Fire and Emergency Services (F&Es) rushed to the site while the local authorities were alerted about the situation. Calls were also made to check on the safety of shopkeepers in the vicinity of this building.

Citizens stated that the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) or District Collector should keep tabs in coordination with local governing bodies across the taluka about the condition of such type of old buildings or houses that could collapse in similar harsh weather conditions.
Meanwhile, a mud house belonging to Kesar Mhalshekar from Mhalshekarwada, Poriem, partially collapsed on Saturday due to heavy rains that lashed the State over a week.
On learning about the incident, Poriem sarpanch Rati Gaonkar rushed to Mhalshekar’s house with the panchayat secretary and handed her a cheque on behalf of the panchayat. “Since the structure was very old an application of Ashraya Aadhar Scheme was sent to the concerned department to repair it. Since the approval of her application has been delayed, she was rendered homeless,” said Gaonkar.
