MARGAO: Emphasising that the pre-monsoon works were underway as per schedule, the Chandor panchayat hit out at detractors for trying to misguide the public.
Chandor deputy sarpanch Marcel Fernandes said that pre-monsoon works had already been completed in three wards and the remaining wards were being taken care off.
He also touched upon the issue of streetlights and said that those Chandor residents making it an issue should attend the gram sabha and check the consensus of the villagers.
He pointed out that there was a gram sabha resolution years ago against the use of streetlights at the market area at night due to security and other related issues as per the demands of the villagers.
Regarding the presence of rubble, Fernandes said it was put temporarily to allow transportation of material required for the ongoing work of interlocking of tiles and other maintenance-related work. He added that the rubble was not affecting the farms or blocking the road and would be removed once the contractor completed the work.
At the gram sabha, the deputy sarpanch launched a green and anti-plastic campaign. As part of the same, the panchayat issued 1,000 cloth bags and a set of 100 bags each have been sent for distribution ward-wise. He said that this was in line with the panchayat’s commitment to create awareness on the dangers of using plastic and keeping the environment clean.
The villagers also demanded that a consultant be appointed and that the work of renovating and repairing the village ground be expedited. Fernandes stated that the panchayat had already written to the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) for funding the same and had been pushing for the work to be tendered soon. It was pointed out that work in neighbouring grounds, like in Macazana, had already started.
There was also a demand for the MLA and ZP member to be present for the meeting. The MLA, who could not be present for health reasons, however, sent communication for the panchayat to update the gram sabha members on the works done in the village. The ZP member was absent.
There was also a discussion on queries regarding the local school and the performance of the committees formed by the panchayat.
