PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has issued notices to 400 Panjim Municipal Market vendors for non-payment of shop rent.

The vendors have been given a seven-day ultimatum to produce rent receipts and trade licences, failing which the CCP will take necessary action, including eviction.
As per the notice issued to the vendors, the CCP has said that from the records it has been found that some of them have not been effecting payment of the rent for the occupation of their shops.
The CCP has asked them to produce their rent receipts and trade licence in order to establish their leasehold licences title in respect of their shops.
The CCP notice states: “You have to comply with the requisition in the present notice within a period of seven days of the receipt of the notice, failing which the Corporation shall be constrained to initiate necessary action against you, for eviction under the Goa Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1988.”
However, the vendors claimed that the issue was discussed with the Mayor and told him that they are ready to sign the lease agreement.
Rajendra Dhaskar, President, Panjim Municipal Market Tenant Association, said, “We had told the Mayor that we are ready to sign the lease agreement. The traders are here for more than 50-60 years. They are ordinary people. They feed their families with the earnings made from the business. Instead of giving them relief, they are being issued notices. It is wrong to term them unauthorised.”
Meanwhile, speaking to O Heraldo, Market Committee Chairman of Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) Bento Lorena said, “None of the shop owners have paid rent for the last 21 years. They were shifted to the new market in 2003. Lease licence was not signed. They were just shifted there. Every time they give some excuses. There is huge amount of money to be collected because of the backlog.”
