PANJIM: Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has given two months time to Public Works Department (PWD), Altinho directing the official to complete the installation work of water purifier plant and to accelerate the work of new water reservoir being constructed at the DMC College, Assagao.

GHRC has further directed the PWD to submit along with the comments the action taken or proposed to be taken by June 20 as per section 18(e) of Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 for not taking effective measures to supply the water regularly to the villagers of Sonarkhed, Assagao.
It has been further ordered that the PWD must supply the purified drinking water to the villagers of Sonarkhed Assagao through bore-well until the work is complete.
Primarily, a villager of Sonarkhed Aishwarya Salgaonkar had filed a complaint in the court of Goa Human Rights Commission against the Principal Chief Engineer (PCE) of Public Works Department (PWD)-Altinho about interruption in water supply to the Sonarkhed village causing hardship to the villagers.
PWD in its reply had explained that water to the affected area is being supplied from the reservoirs located at Dashashira, near DMC College at Ghateshwar Temple.
Furthermore, they stated that the water supply to the Sonarkhed village is affected because it is located at high altitude and at the tail end portion of distribution system. Also, the rapid development has led to increase in water consumption, stated the PWD authorities.
The PWD Chief Engineer further said that a new bore-well will be constructed in the village.
Whilst partly agreeing with the PWD, Salgaonkar however, said the “water supplied by the PWD is contaminated and therefore unfit for consumption.”
