According to the Contract Workers Union, PWD workers are being exploited through low and unpunctual wages. President of Goa Trade Union Confederation, Advocate Ajit Singh Rane stated, “For eight months, the issue of increasing the monthly salary from Rs 4,000 to 10,000 for contract workers has not been solved”.
is pending before the administration. With no option left, the workers have decided to hold a day-long demonstration in all talukas.”
Rane also demanded that the services of contract workers who have been with the PWD for at least three years be regularized. He said, “Until the monthly wages are raised, the workers should be paid Rs 323 per day as minimum wages, besides other allowances based on their knowledge, skill and experience. Also, the pending arrears in view of the minimum wage shall be paid from the retrospective effect of June 1, 2015. The administration should stop the exploitation of contract workers by their employers.”
Rane gave the government seven days to resolve the issue, failing which the Union will hold a water emergency strike ‘Panni Bani Andolan.’
