Monsoons may be yet to fully hit the State, but the Arabian Sea has certainly blown to its abnormality at this time of the year, threatening the existence of beaches and some coastal houses in Canacona taluka.
For the last four days, rains have eluded Canacona taluka, but this has not averted the sea rampage on the entire sea coast, almost threatening the very survival of beaches.
Arabian Sea has gone wild enough and exceptionally violent in Canacona, as huge waves have already begun to pound the shore causing extensive sand erosion, especially during high tide on most of the beaches, informed sources.
According to reports, beaches at Agonda, Colomb, Patnem, Gagibaga and Talpona are threatened with anticipation of severe sand erosions.
The sand erosion has severally threatened one-end of Agonda shore of going into oblivion, so much so that huge chunk of beach stretch have already come under sea, as sea waves constantly pounding the shore keeping in tatters the very survival of several coconut trees.
During last monsoon, this southern end of Agonda beach at Val end had witnessed pounding sea waves causing serious sand erosion and taking away around a dozen of coconut trees and keeping several others in vulnerable situation.
It was then that the than Canacona Mamlatdar Vinayak Volvoikar in the capacity of taluka’s disaster management had visited and inspected the beach shore drastically threatened.
Volvoikar had even informed requirement of some rehabilitation measures to keep beach stretch safe and sound from imminent sand erosion eating out major chunks of beach land every year.
However, locals, who informed that when every year sea eats out into the land portion in the area destroying shore plantations, regret that authorities continue to remain non-responsive and have done nothing so far to avoid further damages.
A local from the area said: “Last year, Mamlatdar had informed us that necessary protective measures will be in place to arrest further sand erosions in the area.”
Interestingly, lifeguard personnel posted on Agonda beach had to shift their makeshift hut, which they have erected on the beach sand into the private land to avoid rampaging waves.
The lifeguard personnel who were seen lifting their warning red flags from the beach which already came under the sea waters on Sunday informed that around half a kilometer of beach is threatened with the waves constantly pounding the shore.
“The shore-end being a picnic spot, lot of people continue to visit Agonda beach, but we don’t allow any picnickers to enter the seawaters, which hisses in every direction,” said the lifegaurds.
