MARGAO: With the monsoons set to approach Goa, locals from Salcete living on the banks of River Sal have raised concern about the potential problems the haphazard River dredging work will cause when it starts raining.
The locals from the concerned villages have already conveyed their fears to the authorities and have also pointed to the accumulation of silt at various places near the river. They believe that the way this silt has been dumped at the low-lying catchment area could lead to the surrounding land areas getting water logged and even flooded during the monsoon.
They have also raised concerns about the damage caused to the ecology and fish species like shell fish due to the manner in which the dredging work had been carried out. They have alleged that mangroves and trees by the river have been destroyed as well as the paths traditional fishermen would use to take their boats into the water or store their boats.
At a recent inspection, the contractor carrying out the dredging work was given instructions by the authorities concerned in view of the complaints raised by the locals.
