This is dangerous to aquatic as well as human life. The Mormugao Municipal Council however, is clueless about the situation. “I have no clue. I will check and revert,” said the Vishnu Naik, Municipal Engineer of MMC, who was in shock after Herald reported the matter to him.
Sources informed that the retaining wall of the dry waste segregation unit that is located adjacent to the Mormugao Solid Waste Treatment Plant based at Headland Sada collapsed a few days back but no one in the MMC, including the chairperson and councillors had a clue about the same. “The piled up plastic waste was touching the compound wall. This would have put a load on the compound, which caved under the pressure and collapsed,” said municipal staff to the Herald on Tuesday.
In July last year, the MSWTP faced a similar problem with the retaining wall collapsing and garbage sliding down into the sea. Back then too, it was the media that reported the matter to the MMC who assured prompt action. However, it took the council eleven months to get the wall repaired and fix the matter.
With the monsoons soon approaching, it is to be seen whether the Mormugao municipality, which is already under fire after the GSPCB registered an FIR against them for not putting the garbage plant in order, will act promptly this time around and repair the wall and stop waste from sliding down the hill.
