CANACONA: An RTO inspector on duty at Polem check post was caught red handed while accepting bribe by members of “Jagruk Canconkars” in the wee hours of Saturday.
Sandesh Teleikar, a member of the NGO named ‘Jagruk Canconkars’, told Herald that they caught on tape an RTO inspector posted at Polem check post while accepting bribe in cash from interstate vehicles passing through the border check post at Polem in Canacona.
Teleikar said that he along with Samrat Bhagat, Janardhan Bhandari, Mitil Chari and a video reporter of a local news channel had gone to the Polem check post to oversee the testing done by the FDA of the fish coming into Goa, they got suspicious when they saw that the RTO inspector at the counter of the RTO office was not returning the balance amount left after deducting tax amount paid by different vehicles coming into Goa, and then they decided to record on camera weather their suspicion was correct.
“We found out that a driver who paid four thousand was returned one thousand rupees when the RTO inspector was supposed to hand over Rs 1650 after deducting the tax of Rs 2350, when confronted with evidence, the officer admitted that he was taking extra money from the out of Goa vehicles coming in to Goa,” Teleikar said.
Jana Bhandari said that most of the drivers they spoke to said that they paid a bribe for smooth entry into Goa ranging from Rs 50 to 1000.
“We will hand over the clipping to the anti-corruption bureau DySP Suchita Desai and SPDO Uttam Raut Desai for information and action,” said the members of the Jagruk Canconkars.
