SANGUEM: The chairperson and vice chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) on Thursday reportedly had a verbal clash over non-removal of roadside stalls which were put for Sanguem feast fair on May 17.
Aggrieved over the non-removal of few stalls erected alongside the main road, SMC Vice Chairperson Shaikh Imtiaz urged the chief officer to direct the stall owners to remove the stalls which are put by the side of the main road proceeding from Sanguem to Curchorem.
Sources informed that while the chief officer was about to direct the officials to remove the stalls, the chairperson’s son reportedly interfered and asked the chief officer not to heed to the vice chairperson’s direction, which led to verbal clash between the chairperson and the vice chairperson.
Later speaking to media, Imtiaz alleged that the chairperson’s son was getting monetary benefit from the stall owners. Imtiaz also accused the chairperson of running the council at his own whims without consulting him. “I had sought removal of the stalls as they were hindering the free flow of traffic on the main road,” said Imtiaz.
When contacted, Chairperson Agnelo Da Costa denied the allegation made against his son by Imtiaz. “It was me who had requested the chief officer to grant four days extra time to the vendors to remove their stalls, as the Margao feast is on the last Sunday of the month,” said Da Costa.
