SANGUEM: The farmers in Sanguem have expressed despair at the state of democracy in Goa, after the Office of the Deputy Collector of Sanguem denied them permission to conduct a peaceful rally on the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ on August 15.
The application for permission to conduct the rally was made by Pedro Cruz, a resident of Dando, on behalf of the ‘Sanguem Bachao Andolan’. The farmers intended to conduct the rally from Cotarli village to the Sanguem Bus Stand, where it was supposed to culminate after speeches by prominent citizens on the environment and social issues.
Sources said that the denial of the permission was linked to the controversial IIT project proposed in Sanguem as Pedro Cruz is one of the main farmers opposing its construction.
