PONDA: The Sanjivani Sugar Factory that had been shut down its operation since 2019-20 has launched various new initiatives to generate revenue. As part of these initiatives the factory has launched fish farming on Friday. This comes after its earlier project of vegetable and fruit production.
The fish breeding unit was launched using the abandoned pits which were dug some two decade back. Three such pits will be used for fish farming. The officials of Fisheries Department and administrator of Sanjivani Sugar Factory Satej Kamat launched the fish farming unit. Around 1500 seeds of various fish such as rohu, catla and common carp were scattered in the fish breeding pits, officials of fisheries department said. The various types of fish will take six months to grow to a weight of around 1.5 kg.

Kamat said this would help to increase the factory’s revenue. He said in 2022, the monthly revenue was Rs 6000 per month and at the end of 2023 it was around Rs 3 lakh per month. Fish farming will provide regular revenue. Now, he hoped to generate revenue to tune of Rs 5 lakh per month from vegetable, fruit and fish farming.
Kamat said 24 plots are developed for growing vegetable farming and eight teams of contract workers are given incentives for their vegetable cultivation. The vegetable production is sold at outlet of Sanjivani Sugar Factory, a ‘bag of vegetable for Rs 100’ initiative was started recently and at same place fish would be made available to locals as soon as its production start.
