Scheme to motivate vegetable cultivation

MARGAO: The Agricultural Technology Management Agency Margao is in the process of launching a new scheme whereby farmers will be motivated to grow high breed variety vegetables and have already identified about five pockets to carry out the exercise.
The five pockets identified are around Margao town and are located at Borda, Davorlim and Dicarpale and surrounding areas where farmers after harvesting the kharif paddy crop immediately grow their vegetables.
“While not disturbing their normal practice we shall ask the farmers to grow the hybrid variety only on a small portion of their land so that they can see the difference in the production and opt for the more commercial variety,” said ATMA Project Director Shivram Gaonkar.
High breed variety chillies, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ridged gourd, lady fingers, cluster beans and long beans seeds will be germinated in trays and sold to the farmers with each tray having around 100 seedlings.
