MARGAO: Stating that all the business establishments have been under lockdown due to COVID-19, Shadow Council for Margao, on Monday, has appealed to the Margao Municipal Council not to charge late fees/interest on trade license fees, which is applicable from June 1 at 25 per cent.

Convenor of SCM, Savio Coutinho said that the normal grace period for payment of trade/signboard dues is up to May 31, thereafter interest/penalty directly gets added through the system. Knowing well the facts on account of the Lockdown, it was required from the Council to intimate the NIC to effect the necessary changes to the system, whereby the interest would not get added.
He demanded that the Council should immediately take corrective measures to ensure that the businessman from Margao, who are already undergoing financial losses due to the Lockdown, are not fleeced further by charging them late fees.
“Under the above-mentioned circumstances, it is mandatory for the Council to consider rebates in the trade license fees and sanitation fees for all the business establishments in the city,” he stated.
SCM also urged the Council to consider at least a 50% rebate on the Trade/Signboard license fees and the sanitation fees.
Coutinho exuded confidence that the demands shall be considered favourably so as to give respite to the people who are already stressed financially.
