A spate of thefts and burglaries in Fatorda has triggered alarm among residents, prompting the Fatorda Police to intensify night patrolling and step up investigations in the area. In the latest incident, an attempted burglary at a jewellery shop near Old College, Fatorda, was foiled in the early hours of Mon day. Unidentified culprits reportedly tried to break into the shop but failed, and no valuables were sto len. Police, accompanied by the dog squad, rushed to the site and launched an investigation. As of Mon day evening, no suspects had been detained. The shop owner said he had left for his native place around 8 p.m. the previous night after se curing the premises. “The next morning, the society chairman called to inform me of some disturbance at my shop. When I arrived, I found clear signs of a break-in attempt,” he said. The owner also alleged that a nearby wholesale store often remains open late into the night, where people allegedly consume liquor and create noise. “I have raised complaints several times, but no ac tion has been taken,” he added. This attempted burglary follows a violent episode in July 2025, when jeweller Sohan Raikar of Borda was attacked by a masked man armed with a hammer. The assailant fled empty-hand ed after a scuffle, leaving Raikar injured. Although police launched an inten sive probe, the motive be hind the attack remains unclear. In another major theft reported in Fatorda, uni dentified burglars broke into a house and escaped with cash and gold orna ments worth around ₹8.6 lakh, along with two LPG cylinders. According to police, the culprits broke open the lock of the main gate and latch of the front door to gain entry. The theft was reported by Prayank Matiman, a native of Uttar Pradesh residing in Fatorda. Police regis tered an offence under Sec tions 331(3), 331(4), and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The case is under investigation. In a separate case, Preeti Lotlikar, a resident of Mun gul Grande, Salcete, report ed that between 6:35 p.m. on October 30 and 2:30 p.m. on October 31, un known persons broke into her house by damaging the main door lock and forci bly opening a cupboard. The burglars made off with gold ornaments val ued at approximately ₹2.9 lakh. Police conducted a panchanama at the site and registered an offence under Sections 331(3) and 305 of the BNS. Additionally, a donation box at the Our Lady of Vailankanni Statue in Bor da was found broken open, with cash reportedly sto len. Police have reviewed CCTV footage from near by areas and are pursuing multiple leads. Several suspects have been inter rogated, though residents remain concerned over the rise in such incidents. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspi cious activity.
