MARGAO: Yogeshwar Shetkar, a Lower Division Clerk (LDC) posted in the Administration Section of Margao Municipal Council, was arrested on December 5, after being on the run for almost five months. Shetkar has been accused of misappropriating a sum of Rs 17,96,800, which was part of the funds collected from stall owners during the Holy Spirit Church Fair held in Old Market, Margao, in May this year.

The case came to light in June, leading to Shetkar’s suspension by the Margao Municipal Council. Gaurish Shankhwalkar, the then Chief Officer of the Council, lodged a formal complaint, detailing the alleged misappropriation. According to the police, Shetkar was entrusted with Rs 28,70,400 collected from 299 stall owners between May 19 and 25,. The money was intended to be deposited into the Margao Municipal Council’s HDFC Bank account, but Shetkar failed to do so, instead spending the amount for his personal use.
An offence under Sections 408 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC was registered against Shetkar on June 20. Despite multiple attempts to serve him with a CrPC notice, Shetkar had evaded the authorities.
Following surveillance, information was received that Shetkar was returning to his residence via the railway station. A trap was laid at the entry and exit gates of the Konkan Railway Station, where he was apprehended at 2:12 am on Thursday. He was then produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Margao and remanded to seven days’ police custody.
