MAPUSA: Major roads in Bardez taluka are a nightmare and are fast turning into death traps for commuters. The Jica-funded sewerage network project in Mapusa has left most of the roads running through this town in bad shape. Locals complain that the repair work of the road outside Mapusa District Hospital was not taken up properly which has put commuters to hardship over the last few years. During this monsoon the state of this road leading from Mapusa Court to District Hospital at Mapusa has gone from bad to worse. Herald team noticed the pot-holes have not been filled properly making it bumpy and a roller coaster ride. The patch work of the pot holes have been carried out very abruptly.
The Councillor of ward No 7 Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), Franky Carvalho, said that the condition of this road is bad due to several vehicles plying on this route and heavy traffic flow. He also assured to carry out work on this stretch wherever needed within the next two to three days.
“This road was last hot-mixed when the Mapusa District Hospital was opened. The Jica-Sewerage work was taken up wherein they dug up the road and patch work was carried out. Currently they are a lot of two and four wheelers entering and exiting the hospital via this road,” said Franky.
“Due to heavy rains also a major portion of the road has got washed out. I will see that the hot-mixing is taken after monsoon,” he added.
A resident of Peddem, Rajju Morajkar Lobo who gave birth to a baby boy three weeks ago goes on to inform about the trouble he was put through due to the bad condition of this road.
“During my pregnancy I had to stay with my mother in Peddem. It used to be very difficult for me to travel to work or anywhere. I used to always get a bad pain after traveling on that road. Also the ambulance cannot speed on this road during emergency due to the bad pot holes. The accident patients travelling to the District Hospital are also facing a problem,” she said.
A source on condition of anonymity said that almost all the roads in Mapusa were dug up for this sewerage work and the restoration of these roads was taken up during the monsoon on a war footing which has resulted in poor quality of work. “I recall that the tarring of the roads was taken up during the monsoon in 2016. The state of this road is in bad shape and needs to be repaired urgently,” the source said.
