MARGAO: Owners of shacks in South Goa have started the work of dismantling their shacks as the tourism season comes to an end in the wake of approaching monsoon.
“We are done for the season and thus we have started dismantling the shacks,” said Cruz Cardozo, President of the Goa Shack Owners Welfare Society (GSOWS).

However, the shack owners are facing an uncertain future as they are pensive about what is in store for them for the next season given the Tourism Department’s Policy for Shacks, which was in place for the last four years, also comes to an end this season and a new policy will be announced for the upcoming season that begins after the monsoon season.
It may be recalled that the shack owners are vehemently opposing the proposed model shack policy, which they believe is being used to displace traditional shack operators and bring in their place corporates to run the shacks. GSOWS had recently submitted a memorandum to the Tourism Department with their long list of demands regarding the next season.
Shack owners from South Goa are also waiting to hear from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) if their proposal of using a common mobile sewerage treatment plant is accepted.
The shack owners held a demonstration recently in Benaulim and are hoping that they can use this for the next season, in view of what happened to some shacks in North Goa, which were forcibly shut early by Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), following directions from the High Court.
