MAPUSA: With the rise in crime cases involving migrants, Siolim and Assagao residents have raised concerns about their safety following several chain snatching and assault cases reported at the Anjuna Police Station.
People suspect migrants to be involved in such crimes, which took place in broad daylight last week.
The first incident was reported in Assagao, wherein an unknown person entered a house that too during the day and allegedly assaulted a lady by covering her with a bedsheet thereby injuring her.
In another incident, unknown person offered a lift to a lady and took her to a nearby jungle and allegedly looted her of gold ornaments and cash.
According to sources, some unknown persons have allegedly looted tourists of their valuables while commuting along the Siolim-Calangute route and vice versa. Villagers suspect the migrants to be involved in these crimes as their number has been increasing day by day. They said it is matter of concern that these people who stay on rent without proper identification move suspiciously in the locality throughout the day. They also survey the areas before committing the crime.
Assagao sarpanch Hanumant Naik has requested the Anjuna PI Suraj Gawas to increase police patrolling in Assagao and nearby areas. The Siolim Marna Panchayat has commenced verification of migrants residing in rented premises.
Anjuna PI Suraj Gawas informed that Anjuna Police are investigating the cases and necessary steps are being taken.
