MAPUSA: The residents of Siolim-Marna gathered outside the primary health centre Siolim on Friday and protested against the installation of a mobile tower on the premise of the PHC.
The residents had earlier stopped the work of the tower prior to the panchayat elections. However, on Friday morning when people came to know that tower work is in progress they gathered at the spot and stopped the work.
Panch William Fernandes said, “We don’t want a mobile tower in a residential area right next to the primary health centre because we don’t want to suffer from health issues. In Gausawado, several people were detected with cancer after the mobile tower was installed.”
“We will not allow this tower in the residential, market area at any cost. It is our request to shift the tower from here and revoke all the permissions that are issued for this tower. We cannot compromise on health,” Fernandes said.
“We had earlier stopped work of the tower before the panchayat elections. If the government intends to develop something then instead of getting a tower, we want the PHC to be upgraded,” he said.
“Installing the tower right next to the PHC and in the middle of the residential area will have an adverse impact on the health of the people,” Kevin, another villager said.
Panch Fernandes further informed that neither the panchayat nor the villagers were taken into confidence before erecting this tower.
