Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has revisited one of cricket’s most entertaining behind-the-scenes stories, involving India’s former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and his iconic six sixes during the 2007 T20 World Cup.
In a recent podcast conversation, Lalit Modi recalled how he had made an unusual dressing room challenge during the tournament — promising a Porsche to any Indian player who either struck six sixes in an over or took six wickets in a match. The light-hearted dare soon turned into cricketing history.
That moment arrived on September 19, 2007, in Durban, when Yuvraj Singh unleashed one of the most destructive overs in T20 cricket, smashing England pacer Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes. The assault left the cricketing world stunned and instantly became one of the sport’s defining highlights.
Modi said he was watching from the sidelines when the over unfolded and immediately realised his earlier promise had been fulfilled. He recalled Yuvraj approaching him soon after the innings with a smile, reminding him about the promised reward in a playful manner.
However, what followed added another twist to the story. According to Modi, instead of waiting for a Porsche to be imported — a process that reportedly took months at the time — Yuvraj opted for a quicker and more practical choice. A BMW available immediately was arranged instead, and the handover was completed soon after.
Modi also shared that he kept the bat used by Yuvraj during that historic over, describing it as a priceless cricketing artefact. He added that its value has only increased over time, now considered far more valuable than multiple luxury vehicles.
