Son held guilty for killing father

The South Goa Sessions Court on Wednesday held a son guilty in the death of his father at Quepem three years ago.
In an order, District and Sessions Judge Nutan Sardessai held Sandesh Gaonkar (25) guilty under Section 304 of the IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder on a statement made by the deceased to a GMC doctor just before his death.
It is leant that the doctor had recorded in the case papers a statement made by the deceased Paik S Gaonkar (55) that he was assaulted by his own son.
The incident had occurred following an altercation between the father and the handicapped son on March 29, 2006. There was no eyewitness and the wife of the deceased had charged a neighbour for the death of her husband.
Public prosecutor Ladislav Fernandes, who represented the state, cited a number of Supreme Court rulings in support of the prosecution case.
The prosecution examined around 22 witnesses while the defence examined three witnesses.
The convict will be heard on the point of sentence on February 21.
