PANJIM: Speaker Rajesh Patnekar was on Wednesday morning admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) for a cardiac-related ailment. The Speaker has been admitted in the cardiac ICU.
Incidentally, the Speaker has been hospitalised just 48 hours before a disqualification petition against MLAs who jumped from the Congress to the BJP is slated to come up for hearing before the Supreme Court on Friday.

Speaking to Herald, GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that Patnekar was shifted to the hospital after he complained of breathlessness. “Patnekar, however, had no symptoms of COVID. He is suffering from cardiac ailment,” Bandekar said. The Dean said that the Speaker is now stable and being treated for cardiac related illness.
In a statement issued, Associate Professor in Cardiology Dr Manjunath Desai said that Patnekar was admitted with breathlessness and minimal fluid retention. “He is admitted for thorough cardiac evaluation, medical treatment and observation in the cardiac ICU of GMC,” Desai said.
The doctor said that Patnekar’s vital parameters are stable and the first stage of evaluation has been completed. Patnekar is likely to remain in the hospital for few days until the entire evaluation is complete.
Desai said that the Speaker has a background history of diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease with previous coronary angioplasty in 2014 at GMC.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane visited Patnekar at GMC. “I pray for his speedy recovery,” Sawant tweeted.
Earlier, Patnekar took to social media to update the people on his health condition and said that he is “feeling perfectly fine”.
“With regards to the recent news about my health, I would like to state that I had come to GMC on prior appointment for some routine check-up,” the Speaker said.
He said that the doctor advised him to do some tests for which he has been admitted to the hospital. “I am feeling perfectly fine,” Patnekar said.
