PANJIM: In ensure smooth movement of traffic on Mandovi and Zuari Bridges, the Traffic Cell has constituted special teams to monitor and manage the heavy traffic flow, particularly at this time when the State is witnessing huge flow of visitors.
“The teams are deployed at the Mandovi and Zuari Bridges to man the traffic. Each of these teams comprise of supervisory officers – Traffic deputy superintendents of police, assisted by police inspectors and police sub-inspectors. The teams also include head constables and constables,” Traffic SP Dinraj Govekar told Herald.
The officer stated that the dedicated teams are in addition to traffic personnel deployed across several places to man the increasing flow of traffic. With the Christmas and the New Year celebrations, Goa has been witnessing a surge in tourists as well as outstation vehicles.
The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the recently concluded winter session of the Legislative Assembly had assured forming a dedicated special traffic cell for management of traffic at both the points of the new bridge construction and Zuari Bridge to ensure smooth flow of vehicles by December 23.
“One team will be in North at Panjim-Porvorim point and another at Agassaim, Cortalim point. At the same time there will be mobile vans which will also keep a watch,” he had said.
The teams, Govekar said, would continue to perform their duties at these points till further orders. “The deployment will continue until further orders because traffic jam is caused during other days too. For the peak tourist season, we have taken additional precautions to tackle heavy traffic,” he said adding, that the Traffic Department will conduct a review of the situation at the new deployment areas shortly.
The government recently inducted 46 new four-wheelers for patrolling, few of which are used as mobile van to manage traffic.
