MAPUSA: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Monday said a delegation of youth from Calangute and Nagoa met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant regarding the stabbing incident of Ravi Shirodkar, at Nagoa-Arpora.
The MLA said, “Goa Police should improve the law and order situation in the State. It is the need of the hour to arrest the anti-social elements and small-time ‘goondas’, who are running extortion activities by taking money from the shop, hotel owners etc. All these need to be stopped completely.”

Lobo said, “Such type of incidents brings bad name to the State of Goa and people who are involved in such organised crime, give rise to ‘goondagiri’. Strong action is needed against them not only in this incident but to check the old records of these accused, who are habitual offenders, who are into extortion, threatening, stabbing and anti-social activities, who get arrested and released on bail.”
“Loopholes of law have to be noted. We are in a democracy and in the Indian Penal Code, there is a procedure to follow on the culprits and this also includes releasing on bail. But it’s the duty of the police to keep a watch on the accused released on bail that he is not involved in more crimes,” Lobo added.
“I urge all the witnesses in Shirodkar stabbing case to remain firm and strong. They should not live in fear. I have also spoken to DySP Jivba Dalvi to keep such anti-social elements in jail by cancelling their bail or externment,” he said.
“These alleged criminals should not get bail, but it is left to the judiciary to decide. Judges should check their earlier records. There are several cases under Section 307 attempt to murder. These criminals should remain in judicial custody till the case is completed,” Lobo stated.
“The law and order in the State should not get disturbed. Police need to build confidence with the locals so that they are ready to lodge complaints without fear,” he said.
He said that the tenants’ verification is very important. Police need to go ward-wise and check the tenants’ premises. Without tenant verification, it becomes difficult to understand if any person, who is coming from another State, is involved in any crime or not.
