Stray dog and cattle menace in the city

Though several animal welfare groups function in the city, the problem of stray dogs and cattle continues to plague the streets and with it the people and traffic too. Walking along the promenade in Campal or the market or even 18th June Road and it is clear to see how stray dogs have made the streets their home.
In the past, the threat of rabid dogs have also been a nuisance that is relatively low today, though the numbers still exist. Another threat has also been with strays darting in the middle of ongoing traffic. Several accidents have also been known to occur due to the menace that is stray dogs.
With the coming of the international Mission Rabies project, the risk of rabies may under control, organisers have also been working on controlling the populations.
The Panjim Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) that is one of the city’s animal welfare society too has been facing the brunt of the numbers as their shelters remain full for most part of the year.
Stray cattle though not as much as a menace as it is in other parts of the state does account for a small fraction of the city’s stray animal population.
