Student crushed to death at Shiroda

PONDA: A ride on his scooter to answer his exams ended in tragedy 
when 20-year-old student of Fr Agnelo Polytechnic Institute at 
Verna died on the spot after being knocked down by a truck at 
Sakharwal-Paz, Shiroda on Saturday morning.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 8.30 am 
when Prasad Balkrishna Gaonkar from Kirlapal Dabal, who is learnt 
to be the nephew of Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar, was proceeding 
to Verna on a scooter (GA-O9-F-6179).
Incidentally, Prasad, a second year student of automobile 
engineering, was to answer his exams at the Verna Polytechnic 
which had just begun on Saturday.
Prasad was knocked down by an oncoming truck (GDS 7114) along a 
narrow road at Sakharwal Paz in Shiroda. 
The truck went off the road to one side while the scooter fell on 
the other side. 
Ponda police arrested the truck driver, Manuel Mascaranhas of 
Karai Shiroda in this connection.
Police conducted the inquest and handed over the body to the 
family for final rites, which were conducted in a crematorium at 
Dabal Kirlapal.
Among those offering their condolences to the bereaved family 
included Sanquelim MLA Pramod Sawant, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral, 
former minister Subhash Shirodkar, Govind Gawde, Satyavijan Naik 
and Nilesh Velip.
