PANJIM: In what could bring cheer to the 6,000-odd strong police force, Goa police department’s proposal to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to start a subsidiary canteen in the State has been given a green signal.
Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg had proposed to start the facility on lines with that of the Defence forces, which will sell commodities right from grocery items to electronics, two-wheelers and four-wheelers at subsidies ranging from 25 to 35 per cent under one roof.
Sources said the proposal has been accepted and the department has identified 100 sq mtrs of area at Altinho. Subsequently more canteens will be opened across the State.
“Government has obtained MHA permission to set up a mall-like canteen under the Central government canteen scheme for the police force. All food items, groceries and other home products would be made available at reasonable price, which would be VAT free,” a senior officer said.
This facility – known as the Canteen Stores Department (CSD) – was initially available for the armed forces only. “It was thought of a long time ago. The approval has encouraged doing something good for the police force. Their families too will be added as beneficiaries,” he said.
