“I am proud that the number of accidents have lessened, but on the other hand 320 people died due to accidents by two-wheelers,” Dhavalikar
Inaugurating the 6th State Road Safety Week, Dhavalikar said the Motor Vehicle Act is a Central act last amended in 1984 and 1998 and mentioned that a new Act will be enacted this year, in which strict rules will be included.
Dhavalikar said that the government has taken up four-laning of national and State highways and major district roads, and work will start in the next five years. He said that the Union Ministry of Road and Transport has decided to include road safety lessons in Classes VIII, IX and X by the next academic year in all States.
GOACAN convenor Roland Martins said helmets must be worn at all times for safety and that he has observed at various places fake helmets without ISI mark being sold. He said this should be stopped.
He added that a new initiative known as Consumer Affairs Cell has been started by the Transport Department in major locations, wherein consumers can complain about the transport system. He said the public transport system should be used by more people.
