Sudin Dhavalikar Backs High Court Verdict on Ponda Bypoll, Says BJP Not at Fault

Senior Goa leader Sudin Dhavalikar has expressed support for the High Court’s decision to cancel the Ponda by-election, stating that while the outcome came as a shock, the ruling was correct.

Reacting to the development, Dhavalikar said that although no one had anticipated such a situation, there is little point in criticising the verdict now as the matter stands closed.

He pointed out that both Congress and AAP had fielded candidates and engaged competent legal counsel, suggesting that they had ample opportunity to intervene in the case. According to him, they could have filed an intervention application, especially since the matter had been ongoing for the past 15 days.

Dhavalikar further stated that the BJP, being in government, could not take such a step, and it was up to the opposition parties to act if they wished to challenge the proceedings.

He also clarified that the BJP should not be blamed for the current situation, reiterating that the unexpected turn of events was not the party’s doing.

The remarks come in the wake of the cancellation of the by-election in the Ponda Assembly Constituency following the High Court’s order, which has triggered varied political reactions across parties.
