Sugar Prices Surge Nearly 40% Across India, Government Weighs Emergency Measures

Sugar prices have climbed to record levels across India, rising by nearly 40% over the past two months, prompting the Centre to consider emergency measures to stabilise prices and ensure adequate supply.

The government has ruled out diversion of sugar towards ethanol production as the primary reason for the sharp increase. Instead, officials have attributed the price rise to lower sugar production, weather-related crop damage, increased festive demand and market speculation.
