“We held meetings with ministers, including Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and all legislators who were positive on our demand. It’s high time Marathi is given official recognition along with Konkani, that already has official status,” association president G R Dhavalikar told the media on Wednesday.
The state-wide agitation, which will be carried out across all talukas starting from December 10, will culminate with a mega rally in Panjim on January 8, 2016.
“The government is only dragging the issue. It does not seem to be committal, which is why we decided to hold the agitation reminding the Parsekar-led government to heed to our demand,” he said. He added, “Once implemented, we will ask the government to release government circulars in Marathi too.”
